BRICS trade unions attend LEMM in Durban 2023.09.28

The Trade Union Forum was followed by a meeting of the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers in Durban, in which a representative trade union delegation was invited to participate, as was the previous South African Presidency. The theme of the meeting was "Ensuring decent work, dignity and respect for all."

 Following the Trade Union Forum, BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' Meeting (LEMM) was held in Durban, in which, as in the previous presidency of South Africa, a representative trade union delegation was invited to participate. The topic of the meeting was "Ensuring decent work, dignity and respect for all."

Representatives of five countries - Cuba, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Zimbabwe - were invited as guests of the ministerial meeting.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Thembelani Nxesi, Minister of Employment and Labour of South Africa.. The Chairman and Director General of the Department of Employment and Labour, Mr. Tobile Lamati, reported on the activities of the Employment Working Group.

A separate session was devoted to "Ensuring Labour Rights at Work", with a presentation by the ILO Director-General Mr. Gilbert Houngbo. At the next joint session on social protection, a presentation was made by Mr. Marcelo Caetano, Secretary General of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), and Ms. Laura Thompson, Assistant Director-General of the ILO for External and Corporate Relations (ILO) who later made a separate presentation on "Jobs and economic growth". Her presentation focused on closing the skills gap in the informal economy through innovation and enhanced productivity.

It should be noted that, during each session, the floor was given not only to BRICS ministers, but also to representatives of the invited countries.

The participants in the meeting were presented the Joint Statement of Labour and Employment Ministers and the draft LEMM Declaration which were adopted by acclamation.

The floor was then given to Mr. Anton Kotyakov, Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation as the next host country of BRICS.

Closing remarks were made by Mr.Tembelani Nxesi, Minister of Employment and Labour of South Africa.

Trade unions delegates consultation. 3rd Annual Meeting of BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers in Chongqing

Delegates of national trade union centres from all BRICS countries were given an opportunity to express their views on the issues on LEMM agenda and to engage in open exchange with the ministers and employer representatives.
