The Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU), the sole national center for more than 700,000 workers, has nine affiliated Industrial Federations which are the umbrellas for about 2001 basic trade unions.
1. Federation of the Food, Beverage, Tobacco and Allied Trade Unions;
2. Ethiopian Industrial Federation of Construction, Wood, Metal, Cement and other Trade Unions;
3. Federation of Commerce, Technique, and Printing Industry Trade Unions;
4. Federation of Farm, Plantation, Fishery and Agro-Industry Workers Trade Unions;
5. National Federation of Tourism, Hotels and General Service Workers Trade Unions;
6. Federation of Ethiopian Textiles, Leather and Garment Workers Trade Unions;
7. Federation of Energy, Chemical and Mine Trade Unions;
8. Transport and Communication Workers Trade Unions Industrial Federation; and
9. Industrial Federation of Ethiopian Financial Institution Trade Unions.
The core organizational objectives of CETU, as stipulated in its constitution, are:
- to defend the rights and interests of its members,
- to unionize the unorganized workers and doing its best to strengthen the unity of organized workers,
- to raise awareness among workers and coordinating workers’ struggle for their rights and benefits,
- to contribute its due share for peace, democracy, protection of human rights and equality of peoples,
- to take an active part in the international, regional and sub-rRegional labour movement.
